Flames from a leaking gas well shot 125 feet into the air above the northwest San Fernando Valley. The 10 foot diameter fire was to burn until the leak is contained as legendary oil well firefighter Paul Red Adair was en route. No injuries or threatened structures were reported.
Khmer Rouge forces captured Okaha Tei island in the Mekong seven miles north of Phnom Penh threatening the naval base at the Mekong Tonle Sap junction. About 100 insurgents drove government troops from the island. refugees fled across the river as 500 troops tried to recapture. Rockets hit central Phnom Penh and the airport area, killing civilians and wounding others.
Philadelphia shoe repairman Joseph Kallinger, 39, is planned to be charged with murder in the Jan. 8 killing of Maria Fasching, 21, in Leonia New Jersey. A blood stained shirt found in a park linked to Kallinger via a laundry mark. Police say he, aided by his 13 year old son Michael, likely attacked Fasching after she refused a sex act.
The Arkansas Supreme Court split 4 to 3 reversing the Pulaski County judge B Frank Mackey on four counts of violating the county purchasing act. The majority found no substantial evidence of guilt as principal or accessory to intentional violation. Justices Smith Jones and Byrd dissented without a written opinion.
