A British freighter the Exter City battled heavy seas Friday in a storm that killed its master Capt. Giles Steadman the third officer and two crewmen. The ship sent distress signals as it was badly damaged in the dawn drama.
In Brooklyn Supreme Court, Sue Rochefort sues financier James A. Stillman for alienation of affections demanding 1 million dollars. Rochefort accuses Stillman of stealing his wife Marjorie, taking her on trips to Havana and elsewhere, while Stillman denies the charges and vows to fight. Affidavits from Rochefort’s wife and mother claim Rochefort benefited financially from the arrangement.
In Tacoma Washington seven year old Mike Bools claims the city caused his mare Old Dollie to slip on an icy street when a leaking gravity line iced the surface. The horse broke a leg and was destroyed. Mike seeks 150 dollars to replace the horse and blames the city for the accident. He filed a claim noting the leak had been reported but not repaired.
Forty four representatives from eight southwest Arkansas counties will convene in Hope to receive bids on the District 10 Arkansas Interscholastic Athletic Association events. Texarkana may split the track and literary events, opposed as unconstitutional. Hope aims to bid for the district track classic and literary events.
Rosston defeated Bodcaw 35 to 22 on Rosston court Wednesday night. Purtle sparked the attack with sharp shooting while Whitehead contributed key assists and floor play, finishing with 11 points.
The Happy Kitchen Cooking School led by Mrs. Kate Stafford comes to this city for a five day event starting Tuesday January 3 with free admission. Lectures cover color in the kitchen labor saving devices and new recipes and menus shown by Mrs. Stafford with daily fresh programs.

Mrs H H Stuart leads a devotional on Galatians and Proverbs 23 31 32 as the group marks thirteen years of national prohibition and discusses past and future Union activities and the Lillian Stevens Legislative Fund.
Gov. Futrell said the legislature must pass emergency measures before recess, including a 30 day study period proposed by Sen. Norfleet. He cited penitentiary food shortages and hospital needs and may seek loans from the Reconstruction Finance Corp. Other actions include a budget balance bill, transferring the county turnback to highway funds, and reorganizing the State Highway Commission.
Tokyo reports the army will dispatch most of 1933 conscripts and auxiliaries under Gen No buyoshi Muto to Manchuria immediately. 1931 conscripts and veterans stay in service beyond their two year terms, increasing Manchurian force strength by about 50 percent.
The infant son of Mr and Mrs P C Stephens of Blevins died about 6 o clock Friday morning after a brief illness. Mr Stephens serves as cashier of the Bank at Blevins.
O A Graves urged Hope High School seniors to pursue a life work they love over quick jobs. He praised apprenticeship, warned that money harms without passion, and noted great leaders began with little pay to build character. The talk, titled Choosing a Life-Work, was at the Rotary Club with 28 seniors and other guests.
China has become a preferred posting for soldiers with good records in Salt Lake City. Sergeant Charles Smith notes that American money buys almost three times as much in China as at home, making overseas service a financial incentive.

An automobile owned by Tax Assessor John W. Ridgdill stolen last Sunday night was located in Poplar Bluff Missouri. The 1931 Chevrolet sedan bore a Texas license replacing the original Arkansas plate and was abandoned in Poplar Bluff. No arrests were made. Police recovered the car after a telegram with motor and license numbers.
The administration of New Guinea under Australian mandate launches a drive to make natural death seen as a normal fate. Chief Judge Wanliss notes the aim is to shift natives away from attributing deaths to sorcery and to accept dying of age rather than violence.
