Cities and counties press 7 percent tax demand in Arkansas
In opening week of the 1973 General Assembly Governor Dale Bumpers faces local government pressure for higher revenue. Cities seek 4 percent and counties 3 percent, with a compromise bill floated. The public resents how one government taxes and another spends, risking broader tax increases at the state level and eroding citizen influence.

Three year old earns reward for flagging train
Roger Smithson, 3, of McCaskill waved to a Prescott and Northwestern train as it passed his yard. Benny Phillips, head brakeman, noted the boy, who then alerted his father to flag the train. The front of a loaded car had jumped tracks, causing a fire beneath. Phillips said Roger’s action likely prevented greater damage or a derailment. On Jan. 12 Phillips presented Roger a $50 Savings Bond on behalf of the railroad.
