The Associated Press notes Arkansas may thaw this weekend with a lull before another storm. No freezing precipitation is expected today as precipitation shifts eastward clearing most highways though ice remains in parts of the state.
The Hope Star reports ice and hazardous road conditions on Interstate 30 near Arkadelphia. About 250 motorists were stranded. churches housed travelers in motels full, offering food and warmth while pastors and volunteers aided transients. Temperatures stayed below freezing with cooler nights and a mixed precipitation outlook into early next week.
Calvin Caldwell notes January 14 to 19 as Home Garden Week with extension meetings at 10 am 1 30 pm and 7 pm in Hempstead County Courthouse. Free garden soil tests offered in Hope on January 17 with agencies about soil varieties insects and diseases providing materials and soil sampling guidance.
An Arkansas State University student Tab Weinberg 18 of Leachville was killed when a car driven by Garland Ricky Davis 91 of Pocahontas pulled a sled into the eastbound lane on an ice slick Craighead County road. Two other ASU students Richard Burke 21 and Danny Sullivan 23 were injured and hospitalized after the collision.
W. O. Vaught a noted Southern Baptist leader will conduct a January Bible study for adults at First Baptist Church starting 9:30 a.m. with daily sessions and evening programs through midweek. He will discuss topics from Who Is God to What Happens to People Who Have Never Heard The Gospel.

Police seized Allison Thompson 18 of Santa Barbara California and Abdelkrib El Hakkaoui 25 a Moroccan who led Santa Barbara City College student government along with Ater Naseen 21 a Pakistani after Thompson arrived from Los Angeles with five pistols and 150 rounds. Naseen arrived in London midweek. The Times and Stanley Davis urged trial for gun running and terror plots as a warning to guerrillas. Investigators say the trio had no links to Al Fatah or Black September and may belong to a Moroccan group seeking to topple King Hassan and possibly target the Moroccan ambassador Abdellah Chorfi.

A six part television nutrition series titled Mulligan Stew debuts Saturdays at 11 30 a m on Channel 6 starting January 5 for six weeks. Dolores McBride notes the program uses color animation puppets and music to teach breakfast diets basic four food groups and future food choices. Hempstead County teachers back the series in grades four and five sharing in class reinforcement. The initiative links youth nutrition to long term health through preventive education.
