Freezing rain sleet and cold weather contributed to at least five deaths in Arkansas late Wednesday night and early Thursday. Four deaths occurred in traffic accidents while another person froze to death, underscoring hazardous conditions across the state.
Mississippi County official reports Watson Darkih found frozen on Luxola Street as ice storms disrupt south Arkansas. AP warns major ice event with 12,000 to 15,000 customers without power, 9,000 in El Dorado. 17 repair crews deployed. Weather Service cautions continued sleet and freezing rain. travel bans or advisories issued. many schools and agencies cancel operations across the state.
Khmer Rouge rockets struck Phnom Penh causing seven deaths and at least 28 injuries. A 3 p.m. blast near a taxi stand and other explosions in a slum, near the Army Headquarters, and residential areas. Government forces report gains on the Mekong east bank and the highway to the coast remains blocked by fighting. North Vietnam says the South remains unstable with scattered clashes and rising violence in central areas and the Mekong Delta.
Calvin Caldwell of the Arkansas Extension Service spoke at the Hope Kiwanis meeting, presented by Autry Wilson. Caldwell described the Extension Service as an educational body with four main fields agriculture family living community development and youth programs. Local dairy decline and beef cattle growth were noted alongside Hempstead County's strong poultry industry and youth programs. Visitors included Gil McElroy Don Bell and Jimmy Wilson with Lews Gregory from Shreveport. Forrest Singleton was birthday honoree.
