South Vietnamese losses included 11 soldiers and seven civilians killed. 3 soldiers and four civilians wounded. A major attack involving a 20-round mortar barrage and a 20-minute rifle and machine gun volley struck American positions near Da Nang, killing five infantrymen of the Americal Division's 196th Brigade. Three enemy soldiers were killed in the return fire.
French cabinet suspends two defense ministry officials after a four hour meeting over the incident involving unarmed boats leased by Israel. The boats left Cherbourg before Christmas, amid claims the action may test official policy toward Israel. Mordechai Cazelles and another senior official signed the contracts. Golda Meir announced the voyage completion, while Israeli officials stated the craft would not be used militarily.
