The Star updates its pool photography gear and gives one older Minolta Hi Matic Model 9 to Hope High School and another to Prescott High School. Each comes with hood, leather case, and battery replacements from The Star. Cameras are to be used solely for school journalism training with no personal use.
Heavily armed police with armored carriers dispersed about 6,000 anti government demonstrators occupying a downtown square since Tuesday. At least three protesters were wounded by gunfire. Defeated candidate Ernesto Claramount Rozeville and many protesters sought refuge in Liberty Plaza church as tear gas filled the building. The National Opposition Union led rallies accusing vote theft after the Feb 20 election that saw Gen. Carlos Romero win another five years.
Lorelle Julson a Swiss national linked to a Memphis kidnapping case faces an extradition hearing at the Arkansas state Capitol at 3 30 p m Today. Authorities say she was served notice but may not appear and Memphis seeks her return for trial in the Blaydes kidnapping.
The Star will raise subscription rates starting Monday February 28 due to higher postage and newsprint costs. Carriers share the increase, with existing rates last set May 31 1975. New prices apply to Hope and nearby towns by carrier and to mail in Hempstead, with no prepayments on old rate subscriptions.
A second La Salle Mississippi River expedition arrives in Helena Arkansas and stays through March 8. It will be honored at a Saturday dinner and present a historical talk at Phillips County Community College. An earlier retracing expedition visited Helena about two years ago.

Herman Frierson, 47, of Hope, was shot with a 20 gauge shotgun on a street near Emerson Stuart's place at 11 25 p m Saturday. He was taken to Hempstead County Memorial Hospital then transferred to Little Rock. Willie Lee Whiterspoon, 27, also of Hope, surrendered Sunday morning. Second degree battery charges will be filed Monday afternoon.
Ugandan President Idi Amin orders a mixed British and American gathering at Entebbe airport. Reports from Nairobi say about 240 Americans and a British contingent are to attend while Britain preserves limited diplomatic ties via the French embassy. The plan follows Amin’s threats of overthrow plots and Israeli actions.
Ronald and Wanda Gibson Maddux face a second degree murder trial in Athens after their 4 year old daughter Melisha was found dead in a cold Cleveland home last October. Prosecutors outline alleged abuse and a confession indicating repeated beating and exposure led to the child’s death. potential penalties range from 10 years to life.
