Five Hold Key to Future of Busing
Five Democratic presidential candidates reportedly hold the key as Senate action on an antibusing amendment looms. Absent for the vote, Sen. Muskie Humphrey Jackson McGovern plan to return for the debate as four campaigns align to erase the amendment. The 43-40 Senate vote added the measure to a higher education bill, with Griffin sponsor. The amendment would strip federal courts of power to require busing and bar threats to withhold funds to desegregate.

Trade Deficit Persists Amid Signs Of Economic Upturn
The Commerce Department reported January trade deficits of 318.9 million dollars with exports and imports rising over nine percent. Imports reached a January record of 4.539 billion while exports hit 4.220 billion. Leading indicators rose 2.3 percent in January, led by gains in new orders, stock prices, and durable goods contracts, though some indexes fell. Regulatory officials say deficit persistence tempers optimism without currency realignment and a substantial surplus. Separately in Arkansas, Perrin Jones resigned as White County Democratic Committee secretary amid speculation about a statewide run for governor.
