Nixon appoints close friend as White House contact for allies
President Nixon designates Roger E. Johnson as a special assistant to liaise with his trusted friends. Johnson, 64, says his role is to ensure direct communication with close aides who lack time to reach the President. The job, unnamed in official records, was created last summer amid reports of blocked access. Johnson notes conversations cover economy concerns and media issues, and sometimes arranging White House invitations. The Johnson family, longtime confidants since Whittier days, joined the Nixons on recent trips to Camp David and the Virgin Islands.
