A weak cold front moved through Arkansas and dissipated in Louisiana, bringing no precipitation. The Weather Bureau said it reinforces cold air with highs in the 40s to mid 50s and lows from the teens to low 30s statewide. Skies were expected to remain generally fair through Saturday. Senators Blasingame and McClellan voted on an amendment banning federal courtordered busing. the measure failed 29 to 30.
AP report from Saigon says Allied forces killed 166 North Vietnamese and Viet Cong in sharp fighting, while two U.S. helicopters were shot down. Over 10 days, 39 Americans and four South Vietnamese killed in helicopter crashes. 36 Americans and 52 South Vietnamese wounded. B52 bombers hit supply depots near borders. Most fighting in Mekong Delta with heavy actions near Phu Vinh. One US soldier killed and 11 wounded in a helicopter crash near Da Nang. another helicopter crash near the Laotian border caused no American casualties.
Edsel Ford, a prize winning Arkansas poet from Fort Smith, died at a Little Rock hospital after brain surgery. He had received multiple honors including the Alice Fay de Castagnola Award from the Poetry Society of America in 1966 for an unfinished collection titled A Landscape for Dante, along with the Arthur Davison Ficke Memorial Award and the Lowell Mason Palmer Award.
The Defense Department announced on Thursday that Army Specialist 4 Gonnie W. Parrish, son of Mr. and Mrs. George E. Parrish of Osceola, has been drafted to serve in Vietnam.
Washington AP reports a federal judge extended a restraining order delaying a nationwide rail strike. Negotiations broke down between railroads and four AFL-CIO shop craft unions, with a hearing today on extending the order. Union leaders warned no strike plans will be made before a court decision.
The Economic Development Administration approved a 48100 grant to the Northeast Arkansas Economic Development District at Jonesboro to support continued planning for economic growth across a 12 county area. The district will provide 22440 of the planning funds.
