The Associated Press reports that precipitation may move into the western portion of Arkansas Wednesday with the National Weather Service predicting it will spread across the state Wednesday night. The system is a low pressure feature moving northeastward, expected to clear out today.
The Hope Star provides weather outlook with fair to partly cloudy skies and brisk west to northwest winds. Tornado watch affecting western Arkansas late Monday night but no severe storms reported. Temperature highs expected in the 40s to 60s, lows 30s to 40s, with rainfall totals varying by location. Detailed rainfall figures listed for Pine Bluff, El Dorado, Texarkana, Fayetteville, Harrison, Jonesboro, Memphis, Little Rock, and Fort Smith. From Stuttgart and DeWitt he discusses the bicentennial flag observance and the Arkansas Post's place in state history. In other news a Pasadena Texas woman died when a U Haul overturned on Arkansas 23 after the driver was blinded by rain.
Exiled writer Alexander Solzhenitsyn warns the Kremlin must allow his files to move with him to exile or risk ending his multi volume historical saga. He says October 1916 is nearly ready, third volume started, and archives gathered since 1966. he vows to continue writing despite displacement. He speaks in Zurich to the AP after expulsion from the Soviet Union.
Valley Forge AP George Foreman heavyweight boxing champion receives his second Freedom Leadership Award for an article on opportunities under the American system. He notes boxing involves hard knocks but cannot tolerate knocking the system. Foreman, 25, earlier won a 1969 Foundation award after Olympic gold and an American flag parade. John Wayne gets George Washington award for patriotism in his record album. Foundation honors about 2,000 people this year.
Henson notes the shortage forces altered work plans and reduces customer need for repairs as fewer drivers mean lower demand. He reports his station receiving 78 percent of 1972 fuel and Lee says his site gets over 85 percent. Mobil HQ supposedly plans a 50 percent increase in allocations for June through August to meet summer demand.
Jefferson County coroner Havis Hester ruled that Jack Stratton Fluery a 49 year old White Hall resident and armed night watchman died from multiple skull fractures after a brutal beating Sunday night at the Ben Pearson Manufacturing Co in Pine Bluff Ark A fellow watchman found Fluery Monday morning and quit fearing he might be the next victim Police noted the theft of a few dollars and change from vending machines and said this was the second watchman killed and the third beating in recent weeks.
Arkansas County deputies report five people found dead from apparent asphyxiation in a DeWitt area tenant farm house. Victims include David Wilkerson and his wife Christine, their two children Tracy Hutchins and Larry Hutchins, and Wilkerson’s brother Ronnie. Heater venting had not been installed and the heater was running.
Detroit police deny a permanent appointment to Alfonso Martinez 21 who rescued a man from a fire and was posthumously praised for bravery. Officials cited past drug use as grounds for rejection though Mayor Young defended him while the county considers a deputy role for him.
Democrat Richard VanderVeen defeats Republican Robert VanderLaan to break a 64 year GOP hold, winning 53,008 to 46,159 amid Watergate themes. Ford comments note economic concerns as VanderVeen calls for Nixon resignation to move past the scandal.
