Steelworkers strike three can plants nationwide
The United Steelworkers union began a walkout at Continental Can Co American Can Co and Crown Cork and Seal Co with 36000 members striking at plants from New York to Los Angeles Houston and Chicago at 12:01 am today. Negotiations with National Can Co continued as the union seeks wage hikes for about 650000 members in metals and can industries this year. The strike aims for a 35 percent wage increase, rejecting the companies 21 month offer including an immediate 30 cent per hour rise and 10 cents later annually for pension improvements.
