In Hempstead County the 3 mill road tax was voted down in November, shifting about $60,613 annually to the county road program from federal revenue sharing. The Quorum Court allocated $70,613 to roads and $2,000 to senior citizens, illustrating a shift from local control to distant funding and warning of debt and inflation.
Representative Wilbur D. Mills has not yet returned to Congress after leaving a military hospital two weeks ago. He remains in contact with President Ford and senior administration officials, and has advised colleagues on the House Ways and Means Committee from his Virginia apartment as he contemplates his future role upon return, possibly Monday.
In Moscow Brezhnev, 68, showed signs of health as he welcomed British Prime Minister Harold Wilson in the Kremlin. Tass reported meetings with Wilson, Defense Minister Callaghan, Kosygin, and Gromyko, amid softened Britain Kremlin tensions after espionage expulsions in 1971.
President Ford plans to nominate Carla A. Hills, 41, head of the Justice Department civil division, to be secretary of Housing and Urban Development. If confirmed, she would be the third woman in a U S Cabinet and would replace James T Lynn as HUD head. Hills is a Los Angeles lawyer married to Roderick M Hills and mother of four.
The Turkish Cypriot leadership announced an autonomous Turkish Cypriot state in the occupied north in Ni Cosia, pledging a federation with a Greek Cypriot state if consented. Rauf Denktash named head, asserting no partition and highlighting community grievances after seven months of invasion. No Greek Cypriot reaction reported.
Secretary of State Kissinger, ending talks with Anwar Sadat, seeks Syria's backing for a staged Egyptian Israeli withdrawal in Sinai. A Syrian editorial urged militancy despite Geneva talks, while U.S. officials hinted at a joint Egypt Israel accord including replacing oil from Abu Rudeis. He plans further talks in Israel with progress unlikely before March 10.
Texas International Airlines dropped plans to restart partial schedules in Texas and Louisiana today after a federal court denied a temporary restraining order against the ALPA. Ground workers began a strike Dec 1, paralyzing service. officials blamed ALPA leadership for blocking operations and said they may pursue other limited flight options while appealing to the Fifth Circuit. The ruling affects a $3 million suit over ALPA honoring ALEA picket lines.
John Cornwell of Conway Arkansas searches for his daughter Geraldine Ann Martin 28 missing since a week ago Wednesday night. She was last seen at a Tulsa Junior College night art class. Police found her car purse and checkbook. A man cashed one check and tried to use her credit card. Cornwell says she is security minded and has vowed to continue the search across Tulsa and surrounding areas.
Arkansas Senate passes Pryor wilderness appropriation 30 to 3, far short of Bumpers’ $10 million goal, enabling the Environmental Preservation Commission to acquire land and match federal funds. House debates abolishing the Public Building Authority with a three member conference committee to Pryor, while approving other bills.
Five Arizona dairy firm executives and four firms pleaded no contest to milk price fixing. Judge Carl Muecke delayed sentencing to Sept. 15 and ordered six months of charity work for the executives and charitable contributions of food equipment and services by the firms equal to fines. One executive, James Graves, will work with the West side Food Bank, delivering milk and cottage cheese and providing repairs. Four others are assigned to Salvation Army work. Ralph De Long is exempt from jail due to heart ailment and is working at St. Vincent De Paul dining room.
Hope Police say four children, all minors, face charges in recent robberies at Countryside Yamaha, T.O. Porter's Implement Co. and Fleet Tire Service. About $113 in cash and small items were stolen. a typewriter and soda-machine keys were taken in the Porter's break-ins.
