Elevator manager testifies in bankruptcy bean dispute
MEMPHIS AP The elevator manager for Hurley Co. of Newport Arkansas testified in federal court that his remark about not going to the penitentiary was not about a Memphis bank loan but about his lack of responsibility for Hurley’s finances. The trial seeks ownership of 1.3 million dollars in soybeans stored by Hurley, amid bankruptcy and claims by about 250 local farmers. The First National Bank of Memphis holds the bean proceeds as loan collateral, while farmers contend manager Cathey knew of broader financial troubles.
