In a frigid Wednesday crisis the city’s gas supply failed and power fell to dimness then silence for hours. The writer urged the gas and telephone companies to warn consumers during city-wide outages and proposed blast signals as early danger warnings to prevent fires from cooking stoves and leaks.

Later, a garage fire on East Second street involved an automobile from a nearby property with no reported damage.

Hope city council adopts an ordinance cutting Mayor Jin Vesey’s salary to 75 dollars a month as part of broader austerity. Proposals include wage reductions for department heads, firing and replacing staff, consolidating labor, and lowering electric and water rates. The council also votes to cut the pound master salary, extends license payment, and reviews theater license reduction with actions deferred.
Britain discussed paying a lump sum of 100 million pounds to the United States as full and final settlement of its war debt in the House of Commons. The total debt balance with America stands around 4 billion pounds, with about 2 billion already paid.

Sheriff John L. Wilson issued a warning to Hope merchants and clerks after a bogus $10 bill surfaced in the sheriff's department while checking daily automobile license sales. The same night two counterfeit $10s were attempted at Gibson's and Cox drugstores. A nervous man, about 26, heavy built, tried to pass the bill at Gibson's before attempting the Cox drugstore. Clerks detected the counterfeit and refused change. the suspect fled as police arrived.
