A series of snow slides in Wardner Idaho killed miner Clarence Weaver, 56, and injured three others. Betty Sawyer, 24, and her daughter Gloria, 3, were buried briefly but survived. another man was pinned by snow. Residents evacuated as slides continued after dawn then again at midmorning.
Gov. Faubus may push a 3 percent sales tax with immediate effect but officials say formalities and notification to about 40,000 Arkansas retailers will take a few days. The bill to raise the tax from 2 to 3 percent passed the Senate and was set for House action. A separate Farm Surplus report shows end year totals at 8.23 billion dollars, down from 8.87 billion a year ago, with a six month loss of 701.79 million versus 392.14 million space.

Voters will elect a County Board of Education Zone 1 member and decide a total 37 mill school tax including 20 mills for maintenance, 8 mills for outstanding bonds, and 2 mill building fund for a proposed $70 000 bond issue to build a new school facility. The administrator laid out a formal request for a one year extension of corporate income and excise tax rates. Taxes are due to drop April 1 unless Congress acts, with no serious opposition to an extension. Current rates yield about 30 billion annually, with corporate income taxed at 5 percent and 30 percent normal tax plus a 22 percent surtax on income over 23,000. Without extension, rates would fall to 47 percent April 1, costing about two billion in revenue, and excise taxes on whisky, tobacco, and automobiles could lose an additional one billion.
President Eisenhower indicated the federal government could intervene to promote oil production for Europe if needed, stressing Europe must not be left without fuel. He said powers exist to influence the oil industry but would avoid disturbing the economy, aiming to shield Europe from economic collapse.

A truck carrying 32,000 pounds of high explosives collided with a passenger train at a suburban Denver crossing. Nobody was hurt. the train was delayed 85 minutes. The rear wheels of the truck were flung, and one bomb was dented. A 26 year old truck driver, Joe Carl Latimer, walked away from the scene. Arsenal employees stated the bombs contained TNT but no fuses.
