Four young children aged 3 to 2 years perished as a fire swept their home in Hayward California. Neighbors attempted rescues but heat prevented entry as the blaze gutted the three room dwelling. The mother said she left to borrow a cigarette when flames erupted. Another home nearby was damaged. Deputy Sheriff Larry Santos noted the kitchen gas pipe remained aflame.
