The Arkansas Senate on Friday passed the administration bill abolishing the State Railroad and Tax Commission and transferring duties to a new three member Corporation Commission and the State Revenue Department. The emergency clause passed 25 to 1, with no debate. the bill awaits the governor's signature. Estimated annual state savings reach $125,000.
Johnny Underwood was held to the grand jury by Justice of the Peace J. P. Baker for the Washington mercantile store robbery. Bond set at 500 dollars. part of about 40 dollars in goods stolen recovered. He allegedly confessed the theft, claiming most items were later moved to Shreveport. Officers located him in woods near Columbus after a five week manhunt.
Senator Wheeler told the house coinage committee that world markets require the United States to release much of its gold stock. He urged remonetizing silver as a remedy to restore America’s world trade relations. The Star previously ran Emory A. Thompson’s detailed article on this argument.
Harvey C. Couch a director of the Reconstruction Finance Corporation urged the Senate committee to liberalize the law for construction loans on self liquidating projects. Franklin Fort warned state legislatures not to alter mortgage collection terms or risk halting lending by all institutions. The Dowager Duchess D Uzes dies in Dampierre while Probate Judge David W. Crosland is found dead in Mobile at 57.
Nine women psychopathic patients died in a fire at Ridgecliff sanitarium in Wickliffe, after destroying the dormitory and fleeing in panic. Nurses tried to rescue them but all bodies were recovered eight hours after the blaze, ruled incendiary by Dr. William Clendenning, husband of the superintendent.
Frederick G. Bonfils, 72, longtime Denver Post publisher and West figure, died in Denver after influenza and an ear infection. He helped build a regional newspaper, fought public battles, aided exposure of the Teapot Dome scandal, and clashed with the Rocky Mountain News in a libel suit. Born December 31, 1860 in Troy Missouri, he led varied ventures from lotteries to town development before returning to Kansas City journalism. President Hoover sent condolences.
Mrs. Kate Stafford bade farewell to a record crowd at the Saenger theater marking the end of Hope's four day Free Cooking School. Attendance exceeded 3 500 women drawn from Hempstead county and nearby areas. The program featured recipes from Mrs Stafford with recipes and sponsors listed by 17 cooperating firms. A Creole Chicken dish was demonstrated using Campbell soup butter onions pepper mushrooms and peas.
A House committee in executive session at Hotel Marion voted to return House Bill 228 without pass. Debate followed as sheriffs led opposition over county government restructuring while officials considered a possible minority report and weekend public input.
A community musical program will be presented at First Methodist Church at 5 30 Sunday evening. The program includes organ works, anthems by J A Wallace and choir, solo and violin pieces, a quartet and a final hymn. The church choir is listed with named performers and includes several local musicians.
General Augusto Sandino, longtime insurgent leader, makes peace with Nicaraguan President Juan Bautista Sacasa. Sandino flies from the hills to discuss terms, then returns to disarm his forces. Official terms remain undisclosed as Washington notes the development.

The Arkansas Highway Commission on Thursday announced the director of highways selection would be postponed for several days. A questionnaire will be sent to applicants to gather needed information before the final appointment. The commission also reorganized to cut costs, transferring the License Collection Department to the Revenue Department and laying off staff, saving about nine thousand dollars monthly.
