Senate approves overhaul abolishing two commissions

The Arkansas Senate on Friday passed the administration bill abolishing the State Railroad and Tax Commission and transferring duties to a new three member Corporation Commission and the State Revenue Department. The emergency clause passed 25 to 1, with no debate. the bill awaits the governor's signature. Estimated annual state savings reach $125,000.

Robbery Suspect Held to Grand Jury in Washington Case

Johnny Underwood was held to the grand jury by Justice of the Peace J. P. Baker for the Washington mercantile store robbery. Bond set at 500 dollars. part of about 40 dollars in goods stolen recovered. He allegedly confessed the theft, claiming most items were later moved to Shreveport. Officers located him in woods near Columbus after a five week manhunt.

Nine Women Die in Wickliffe Sanitarium Fire

Nine women psychopathic patients died in a fire at Ridgecliff sanitarium in Wickliffe, after destroying the dormitory and fleeing in panic. Nurses tried to rescue them but all bodies were recovered eight hours after the blaze, ruled incendiary by Dr. William Clendenning, husband of the superintendent.

Bonfils of Denver Post Dies at 72

Frederick G. Bonfils, 72, longtime Denver Post publisher and West figure, died in Denver after influenza and an ear infection. He helped build a regional newspaper, fought public battles, aided exposure of the Teapot Dome scandal, and clashed with the Rocky Mountain News in a libel suit. Born December 31, 1860 in Troy Missouri, he led varied ventures from lotteries to town development before returning to Kansas City journalism. President Hoover sent condolences.

Cooking School Concludes Huge Hope Event

Mrs. Kate Stafford bade farewell to a record crowd at the Saenger theater marking the end of Hope's four day Free Cooking School. Attendance exceeded 3 500 women drawn from Hempstead county and nearby areas. The program featured recipes from Mrs Stafford with recipes and sponsors listed by 17 cooperating firms. A Creole Chicken dish was demonstrated using Campbell soup butter onions pepper mushrooms and peas.
