The Hope Cooking School, in its fifth year, closes Friday afternoon and has drawn over 3,500 women, a gain of about 50 percent over previous years, proving the kitchen remains a vital community focus.

J M Rider a clerk surprised Bill Chambers 25 of colored roving stock in Landes Supply store storeroom behind sugar sacks. Wade Warren fired twice but missed. Chambers fled toward box cars but was captured. He surrendered two bars of soap and was jailed. Landes staff believed he planned to rob after closing.
A community singing will be held Sunday at 1:30 PM at Union Grove church three miles east of Blevins. All singers are invited and urged to bring musical instruments and song books.
Hempstead county will begin selling Arkansas automobile license tags in Hope and Washington on Monday February 6 Sheriff John L Wilson announced. Owners must buy plates immediately due to delays in the reduced license fee law. The sale will run under a 10 day grace period ending February 16.
Roy W. Spence, formerly of Mississippi county, was appointed executive secretary of the State Highway Commission to take over the duties of V. A. Kleiber and Mike H. Thomas. The commission postponed action on selecting a director of highways, who will succeed Dwight H. Blackwood as chairman under the old structure.
A vacant Fulton Street house burned at 12 15 Thursday morning. Firemen estimate the loss at 2000 dollars. Owned by John M Inyart of Lewisville and previously occupied by Mr. Cornelius, the blaze cause remains undetermined though partly insured.
Arkansas opponents of a truck tax bill told the joint Roads and Highways Committee that they have an ally on the new state Highway Commission. C. H. Murphy of El Dorado said he will not yield.
President elect Roosevelt proposed a vast 200000 job program in the Tennessee Valley including reforestation reclamation water power and agricultural rehabilitation He envisions spreading similar projects to other regions to balance population and decentralize industry while aiming for self sufficiency and long term employment.
Robert L. Q. Brien, chairman of the tariff commission, told a House committee on February 13 that supporters of the Crowther bill aim to embargo depreciated currency nations. He urged honest and intelligent action, arguing lawmakers voting for the bill believe off-gold-standard countries are economically better off.
Charles A. Miller head of the Reconstruction Finance Corporation urged a Senate committee to add 150 million dollars for direct relief loans to states. He endorsed the Wagner bill to liberalize relief law but opposed opening all RC funds to states. He warned the 300 million dollar fund may not last until June.

Joe Jackson, 40, a Black man, was hospitalized with a shotgun wound to the left arm after a quarrel over a shotgun at a South Hazel street filling station. He said the injury occurred during a drunken dispute with Booker Williams and Birdie Fynn after consuming liquor known as block and tackle.
John Henry Simms and George Cantley, Hope residents, were jailed or released on bond after police recovered over 100 stolen chickens. Texarkana buyers and local farmers identified the fowl, with hearings likely next Monday.
