The Associated Press reports cloudiness faded overnight across Arkansas with sunshine widening today. Only northeast Arkansas was expected to lack sun before midafternoon as a weak high pressure ridge from the southeast Texas coast to Missouri shifts across the state. A weather-producing low pressure system lies nearby.
The Hope Star issues a December 31, 1975 weather summary noting a split pattern with rain and dreary weather earlier in the week and a developing winter storm in the central Rockies. Pam Meinecke, 17, of Fayetteville was selected the 1976 Arkansas Junior Miss at Little Rock. She won a preliminary youth fitness award and wore a bear costume for a talent skit Bare Necessities based on a Walt Disney character. First runner up Stormy Hayes of Magnolia. Nan Andrews of Marianna second. Mary Ann Willines and Cheri Shaddox of Harrison third and fourth. The piece also notes Thomas Mott Osborne initiating convict self governance at Sing Sing Prison.

The Hope Lions held their final 1975 luncheon at the Sheraton Inn with no speaker. President Jack Caldwell announced Christmas auction receipts near eighty two hundred dollars, pending treasurer Bill Dwight’s absence. Secretary Barry Wilson noted new members, transfers, and deaths, plus attendance and interclub visitation concerns. A $6250 check was presented to Paul Henley of City Parks and Recreation for Youth and Community Center Building from the park shop. Guests included Scott Gunter, Calvin Honey, Keith Dodds, Sam McHenry, Gary Pinkerton, and Lion Warren Plyler.
Britain summoned its ambassador to Chile for an indefinite stay after Dr Sheila Cassidy reported being stripped and tortured during two months as a prisoner of the Chilean military junta. London said it would present evidence to the UN Human Rights Commission and demanded a full inquiry while Chilean officials prepared a response.
Grace Baptist Church will host New Year’s Eve services starting 8 p.m. extending past midnight with preaching, singing, and testimony. Refreshments served. Pastor Richard Martin invites all to attend.
