The Associated Press reports the immediate Arkansas weather picture shows no precipitation with the National Weather Service forecast calling for partly cloudy skies and slightly cooler temperatures today. Fair skies and cooler readings are expected as the day progresses.
The Hope Star reports warmer temperatures ahead with showers possible by Saturday due to approaching low pressure from Oregon and a high pressure system over Texas. Daily highs in the 40s to 60s, lows in the 20s to 30s, and rainfall figures for the area are listed along with an experiment station report. Percy Dunlop, 87, famed Mr Chips teacher at Star Lane Junior School, reflects on nearly seven decades of teaching since 1905 while still active in London.
South Vietnamese troops moved 150 casualties after a 18 killed 42 missing and 8 wounded in a Christmas Day Viet Cong attack. Government forces reinforced the region with 1 500 troops as two Viet Cong and two government soldiers died on Wednesday.
The Rev. John Anthony a Hope High School graduate will speak during the special Student Night program at First Baptist Church Sunday. He and his wife Connie have been named by the Southern Baptist Foreign Mission Board to serve in Israel beginning with orientation January 3 in Pine Mountain Georgia and depart April 1 for the field.
Harold B. Lee, president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for eight months, died at 74 after hospital tests. Spencer W. Kimball is expected to become the next church president, with Ezra Taft Benson and others in line. Lee’s death ends a brief, controversial tenure that included public discussion of race and church policy.
President Nixon vacationing in San Clemente rode United Airlines Flight 55 from Washington to Los Angeles. He sat in first class surrounded by Secret Service, mingled with passengers, chatted along the aisles, and signed autographs en route to the Western White House.

Members of the Youth Hand Bell Choir from First Baptist Church directed by Jim Hart performed Christmas songs at the Hope Rotary Club meeting on Friday December 21 at Town and Country. Rotary members briefly tried the bells, then Teena Smith Denise Richards Cindy Garrett Emily Peterson Ann Thrash Jan Rowe Doreen Smith and Tim Hart returned them. President Bob Gullett welcomed guests including Linda Wray and Bob Garrett, announced the final 9000 payment to the Hope school pledge, a used exercise bicycle for Lynn Norton, and that Operation Goodwill would be led by Hope High School students before Christmas. He closed with holiday wishes and noted the next meeting January 4.
Lt Col John C Amos son of Mr and Mrs C W Amos of Hope is promoted with oak leaves turning silver as Brig Gen Lloyd J Faul presents the insignia. Amos, assistant secretary of USAOCS since June, has served in Panama Canal Zone and Vietnam and holds a chemistry degree from Henderson State. He and wife Lynda have three children Donna David and Deborah.
Nevada County Chancery Court is asked to void State Rep. Charles L Honey’s Aug appointment as deputy prosecutor alleging unconstitutional holding of two offices and a conflict of interest. The suit seeks salary repayment, stop to trial actions, and attorney fees, with a Jan 15 court session anticipated.
