Snow ended in northeast Arkansas as a winter storm moved northeastward. Traveler advisories were lifted but motorists were urged to check road conditions in snow covered areas. Snow depths of two to five inches were common in northwest and northcentral Arkansas.
Tilly Losch aged 71 dies of cancer in New York. Bishop C Ewbank Tucker aged 80, Louisville clergyman and civil rights activist, dies. Stark S Dillard of Dillard Paper Co. aged 81 dies in Greensboro after brief illness. In other notes a Chestnut anecdote explains the origin of the phrase pull the wool over one s eyes from days of white wigs.
Jolyn Herndon invites the public to the 19th annual Arkansas Junior Miss program in Little Rock December 27 to 30. Sixty high school seniors will serve as state delegates in four days of preliminaries and finals on December 30 at Robinson Auditorium. The amateur musical features the theme Happy Birthday America and all delegates will be shown on KATV December 29 and 30. The Arkansas project has earned 20 national honors since 1958, with Rosemary Dunaway named America's Junior Miss in 1967 and Julie Forshee honored as the 18th America’s Junior Miss this year. The Arkansas Oath Council sponsors the project.
Gov. Bill Waller cites a National Planning Association survey predicting a 23.6 percent rise in Mississippi manufacturing employment by 1985, higher than any other state, as industries show growing relocation interest and pay higher wages demanding more skilled workers.
In Beirut, Tripoli and Zahlah heavy fighting between Christian and Muslim factions continued through the night. Mortar and rocket exchanges left police reporting three officers and seven civilians dead from sniper fire, with many families sheltering in basements. Premier Karami met Yasir Arafat in Beirut in a bid to curb the clashes.
Alex Boswell age 69 died after a brief illness. He lived in Bodcaw was a retired forester and farmer and a Bodcaw Baptist Church deacon. Surviving spouse Elza and 11 grandchildren. Funeral held at Bodcaw Baptist Church with burial in Union cemetery. Perry Forester 68, Nashville native died in Idabel Oklahoma hospital. Retired trucker and farmer member of Church of God. Survivors include Mary Forester and several children and grandchildren. Funeral at Coffey Ruiz chapel with burial in Denison cemetery.
The Rev. Gordon Renshaw of Unity Baptist Church delivered a Christmas message using Galatians 4 4 5 at the Hope Lions luncheon in the Sheraton Inn. Program chairman Bobby Joe Lee led the event with guests and Lions members named among the attendees.
Debo rah Mackall took her four year old daughter Candy and two year old son Rodell to a Queens department store for last minute toys on Christmas Eve. She left them in the third floor toy department about six p m and returned ten minutes later to find they were gone. Police and store security launched searches of the store and the subway area, but the children were not found.
Last year Congress aimed to simplify taxes but mostly succeeded in reducing rates while worsening forms and instructions. Commissioner Alexander notes the new tax forms are more complex, yet about 84 million filers will see benefits including lower withholding and a host of changes such as a per exemption credit, higher standard deduction with new caps, expanded tax tables, a negative income tax concept for low earners, plus a housing credit up to 2000 under certain conditions.
Police traced a Christmas Eve furniture store shootout to a robbery. Four people were killed and W. T. Zeigler Jr., owner and friend of Police Chief Don Ficke, was wounded. Another victim was Charles May, a customer. Zeigler's wife and her parents also died. Investigators spoke of at least 15 shots. Five handguns and a shotgun were recovered.
The TU144 started regular mail and freight service with a 119 minute 2050 mile flight from Moscow to Alma Ata at 57000 feet. Two weekly trips planned. passenger service to begin in 1976. Environmental impact studies noted. Western journalists excluded. Concorde similarly slated to begin passenger and mail service in January.
