Fire insurance rates not to increase says AP official
Commissioner Trayway G Combs of ARKATgas reports fire insurance companies do not plan rate hikes this year despite an average five year loss of about 2 percent. Premiums totaled 71.8 million this year with 75.5 million paid out for claims and expenses, a net loss of 3.9 percent. Combs notes insurers aim for five percent earnings, but refiguring rates would cost more than absorbing losses. He cites 1955 as an exceptional year and 1958 as paying 39.5 percent of premiums.
