State Comptroller Griffin Smith fined Dr. L R Brown superintendent of the State Hospital for Nervous Diseases $100 for delays in supplying detailed expense accounts. The request sought records dating back to 1928. Brown said he had not refused, only not yet compiled the data.
Oscar Byrd a 45 year old Hempstead county moonshiner was arrested after eluding officers for over a year. Captured by Atoka Oklahoma officers he was brought back to Hempstead to stand before Ward en S L Todhunter of the Arkansas penitentiary following a 1931 whiskey still case and a guilty plea in circuit court.
Amy Johnson who holds the London to Cape Town speed record passed Oran Algeria on her return flight aiming to lower the northward record held by Victor Smith of South Africa. Smith then departed London for Cape Town attempting to beat Amy's southward record.
Thomas Butterfield aged 39, a Columbus City Prison trusty who walked away last July, surrendered after returning for his medicine. Judge Joseph M. Clifford freed him on recommendation of Prosecutor Wayne Fogle following a bid to California and back.
Gifts to the Goodfellows Fund have not started as of Thursday noon. The Star office in South Walnut Street will receive donations to be used for toys, food, and clothing for needy families this Christmas. Commander Ched Hall of the local American Legion posts will canvass the city if contributions don’t arrive within 24 hours.
Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Boyett aged 27 was found shot to death beside her 4-year-old son, who lay critically injured in a parked car on the city outskirts after the pair vanished from their home. Police report indicate the woman shot her son and then killed herself. The husband L J Boyett said she had suffered a recent breakdown over their invalid child.
Charles E. Taylor formally announced Thursday as a candidate for alderman from Ward Four in the city primary election on January 24. Taylor, known for past service on the city council, seeks re election. He made no formal statement.
