At New Mexico State Penitentiary 14 guards faced 900 inmates as five men escaped from cellblock No 5. Four crossed two fences in seconds. Thomas Campos surrendered, Arnold Melon hobbled away, while Franklin Harrison Faustino Castillo Jr and Jacob Armijo fled into the night before Armijo was captured later. Harrison and Castillo remained at large.
President elect Jimmy Carter chose W Michael Blumenthal chair of Bendix Corp to be treasury secretary and notified key senators. Carter aims to complete his Cabinet by Christmas and will announce at least four cabinet picks this week.
The Hope Lions Club will host the 1977 midwinter conference for Multiple District 7-L Lions International on January 29-30 with about 500 Lions and wives expected from Arkansas. Nomination of Jim Fowler of Little Rock for third vice president will be a highlight, with Lloyd Morgan of New Zealand as guest speaker.
