Wednesday Forecast Clouds and Rain Across Arkansas

The National Weather Service reports rain developing in southern and western Texas may reach southwestern Arkansas this afternoon and spread eastward tonight. Rain is likely across the southeastern two thirds of Arkansas tonight and Wednesday as a low pressure system moves northeast through Mississippi. Expect increasing clouds and warmer temperatures today with clearing, colder weather by Thursday. Experiment station data show a high of 46 and a low of 19 for the prior 24 hours.

Tyger Fails to Arrive as Clemmency Bid Drifts

Tyger, an escapee from Cummins Prison Farm, did not board a return flight from Tucson to Arkansas after a 2:59 p.m. departure. Gov. Dale Bumpers had indicated clemency might be granted if no purpose was served by denial. State police waited at Little Rock as Tyger pondered a voluntary surrender or possible later Dallas flight.

Hope Rotary hears oncoming Arkansas legislative session

Travis Mitchell announced Rep Larry Patterson as guest speaker at the Hope Rotary noon meeting on December 6 at Town and Country. Patterson said the January 13 start to the legislature will be long with topics including license fee increases, ERA ratification, funding, teachers' salaries, and criminal code revision. He urged letters to legislators and noted Arkansas’s sound finances. President Gerald Keith led the meeting amid birthday wishes to Roy Anderson and visitors from Texarkana and local officials.

Pryor forms 10 member task force on Amendment 56

Gov elect David H. Pryor announced a 10 person task force to study implementing Amendment 56 aimed at county government reorganization. The panel will report by January 10 with recommendations to the General Assembly. He spoke at the Farm Bureau convention and reiterated plans to phase out county school supervisors and expand juvenile services administration.

Ford urges approval of unemployment bill

President Ford urged Congress to pass a emergency measure extending unemployment benefits by 13 weeks and offering up to 39 weeks with federal funding. The plan would expand coverage to about seven million more workers including state and municipal employees and farm and domestic workers. Ford also prepared a national address on the economy for Wednesday before the Business Council in Washington.

Nashville City Hall Dedication With Open House Ceremony

The city county building in Nashville will be dedicated Saturday at 2 p.m. with three hours of open house and guided tours of the 15400 square foot facility. County Judge Randall Mathis of Arkadelphia will speak, followed by tours and courtroom refreshments.

Funeral services for Grover Milford 86 in Texarkana

Obituary notes Grover Milford died early Monday in a Texarkana hospital at 86. Services held Tuesday at East Memorial Chapel Texarkana with Dr. Wilbanks officiating. Burial in Rose Hill Cemetery Hope. Survivors include wife Myrtle and several nieces and nephews.

Blood drive hits Hempstead quota in October report

Arkansas Blood Center notes two Southwest counties, Howard and Hempstead, reached quotas in October. Hempstead’s daily target is 105 pints. a recent visit yielded 213 pints, three over. Donors receive identification cards for blood type and donation history. Free cards available December 16 and 17 at First Baptist Church, 3rd and Walnut, noon to 6 p.m.

Telephone directories shrink in Arkansas by 45 000

Southwestern Bell in Arkansas reduced the yearly directory total by about 45,000 and expects about 720,000 books distributed in 1974, down from 763,682 in 1973. The policy: one directory per residential phone unless extra copies are requested, except in Little Rock. Business phones exempt.

Viet casualties mount as Saigon reports 2,000-plus losses

Saigon says on the fifth day of intensified fighting South Vietnamese casualties exceed 2,000 with 325 government troops killed 1,374 wounded and 320 missing mostly in the Mekong Delta. The Saigon command also says 1,800 North Vietnamese and Viet Cong were killed and reports heavy losses around Moc Hoa and a district town south of Saigon as Communist forces press to wear down the South Vietnamese army amid aid curbs.

Lawmaker proposes phased sales tax repeal on food medicine

State Rep. Robert E. Johnston of Little Rock filed a bill to remove the state sales tax on food and prescription medicine. The plan would phase in the exemption over two years, setting 2 percent until July 1, 1976, then 1 percent until July 1, 1977, and repeal thereafter.
