Greeks vote to end monarchy. provisional president planned

Greece rejected the monarchy by over two to one in a plebiscite 69.2 percent in favor of a republic with 30.8 percent for restoration. Parliament likely to elect a provisional president this week with Panayiotis Kanellopoulos as leading candidate and Karamanlis to propose a new constitution clarifying presidential powers. The former king Constantine would need to renounce royal titles before any return. Caramanlis will push a constitution defining the presidency, aiming for strong or weak powers depending on the proposal. Constantine, in England with his family, urged a return but faces the plebiscite verdict and royal renunciation. The vote, while expected, surprised observers by its size. Greece had previously become a republic in 1924 and 1974.
