West Memphis merchants urged to close Sundays

West Memphis Arkansas merchants are urged to voluntarily close Sundays to aid energy conservation. Mayor Tilden Rodgers said about 30 to 40 shops stay open, including groceries and hardware. City Council approved a Sunday closing resolution after Christmas, aiming to cut heat and lighting use and reduce travel. Some shops requested the measure, but enforcement depends on merchant cooperation. If noncompliant, officials may consider old blue laws.
