The Associated Press reports that Arkansas will enjoy clear skies and cold temperatures through Friday as a large high pressure ridge centered over northeast Colorado feeds dry air into the state. The long range outlook hints at unseasonably warm temperatures later.
The December 6 1973 Hope Star lists staff roles including editor Paul H Jones memorial and various department heads. Funeral services were held for Mrs. Claudia Pickler 96 at United Methodist Church Taylor Arkansas with burial in Harmony Cemetery. She died in a Taylor nursing home and is survived by sons daughters grandchildren and great grandchildren. Pauline White Smith 73 Hope Arkansas died in a local hospital with two sons three daughters a brother and a sister and multiple grandchildren and great grandchildren. Funeral services set for December 8 at Unity Baptist Church with burial in Memory Gardens. Harry Burns 62 died with funeral services at Herndon Funeral Home chapel and burial in Mercury Gardens.
Halliburton Services invites ambitious men aged 21 plus with a high school education or equivalent and mechanical aptitude to a six month training program to become oil well cementers. The firm offers paid classroom training, lodging, meals, and transportation, with subsequent salary increases, moving costs, housing allowances, and tax advantages. City Hall notes rain delays construction across West Industrial Park and city sites including a parking lot across from City Hall and drainage and tennis projects. January will see plastic bag distribution to households to cut sanitation truck fuel use. Parking meters may be installed citywide until downtown work finishes next year. An airport operations committee will oversee basing and operations from January to April.
About 12 years ago Hempstead County Red Cross officials and local medical people joined the Red Cross blood program. As long as the county meets its quota blood will be available at Branch or Hempstead Memorial Hospitals. If you gave in the last 12 months you can receive blood outside the county. Spouse and children under 18 and parents are also assured blood. Give a pint when the Bloodmobile comes to Hope December 10 and 11 at the First Baptist Church from 12 noon to 6 p.m. Entrance is at Third and Walnut Streets.
Benton Ark AP Benton City Council calls for a police department investigation after charges of marijuana use or sale by some officers. Attorney Lovell to request a late investigation by the Criminal Investigation Division, with findings to the council. Mayor Butler says resignation vote for Police Chief McClintock failed. Hart may be fired following a polygraph test. Hart was suspended then reinstated after a November hearing.
Area girls are invited to enter the Miss Arkansas Teen-ager Pageant to be held at the Arkansas Arts Center in Little Rock on June 29, 1974. The pageant serves as the state preliminary to the Miss National Teen-ager Pageant in Atlanta on August 31, 1974. Reigning Miss Arkansas Teen-ager is Sharon Parham of Hope. Pageant director Fredda Odom announced the invitation and judges will rate contestants on scholastic achievement leadership poise personality and appearance with no swimsuit competition. The winner receives a scholarship and an all expenses paid trip to compete for Miss National Teenager. Contestants must be 13 to 17 years old.
