Price Commission Warns Firms On Passing Wage Costs

The Price Commission told U.S. businesses they cannot automatically pass full wage increases to customers. It cut Old Ben Coal Co.’s requested price rise to 3.78 percent from 6.71 percent, saying only 9.6 percent of the miners’ 15 percent wage and benefit hike could be passed along. Grayson said he will apply the same standard across the coal industry and stressed scrutiny of wage-led price requests. The panel also noted mixed responses in a survey of 500 firms, with 20 percent saying no price increase, 40 percent planning modest rises, and 20 percent noncommittal. The Senate extended Nixon’s economic powers to April 30, 1973, and General Motors outlined price distribution for a 2.5 percent rise including a $51 increase for the Chevrolet Vega and other model adjustments.
