In Hope School District 1-A voters face a December 5 election on raising millage from 35 to 40. The editor urges rejection, arguing higher millage masks a weak assessment base and urging continued appraisal reforms to fund schools more fairly.
Weather notes show total precipitation 46.46 inches for October through November, versus 424 inches last year. Experiment Station report highlights daily highs near 4 and lows around 22. A warming trend is noted as December begins with milder temperatures. Continued on Page Two.
The FBI announced the Thursday arrest of Andrew James Robinson a 20 year old Black man charged with fleeing Texas to avoid armed robbery prosecution. Police said Robinson was arrested near Magnolia while working as a pulpwood cutter. He is recharged at Fort Worth with robbing a store at gunpoint in September.
In the General Assembly the United States rejects delaying the China seat issue and moves to declare the Nationalists’ right to representation while opposing Peiping. The Soviet Union pushes to seat Peiping, while the Arab bloc’s Kuwait veto and Ireland’s nuclear pact resolution dominate debate.
John Hicks unveiled an electronic shark repellent at the Miami Seaquarium testing on a rubber raft. Navy observers and news crews watched as a small shark was given a mild electrical tickle and a larger eight foot brute bumped the raft, scattering Hicks to safety.
In Lynbrook New York a one year old boy was found dead in a storm drain pipe over 75 feet from his entry point. Police said George Laumenady suffocated after disappearing last Saturday when he went to get a soda.
Governor Faubus pledged to remove illegitimate children from welfare rolls and backed welfare workers facing trouble. He warned he would take the case to the White House and could again call out the National Guard. Welfare officials argued against prosecuting parents, while Rep. Mills urged limits on federal and state grants and noted foster care may legitimize dependent children.
Nerma Brumfield 97, a former Hope resident, died Thursday at Big Springs Texas. Survived by five sons Cy Tk St. Louis My le Re Fort Worth S. Wi. AL I D. W. Brumfield Texarkana and a daughter Mrs Re Ns Joh Big Springs. Services will be held at Texark Ueana Saturday. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery of Mupe.
Mrs. Ed Ragenia Tucker Knighton, 92, died Thursday at Little Rock. She formerly lived in Hope. Services will be held at 10 a m Saturday at Healyorth Wuncayl Home, Little Rock. The burial will be reburied to Hope for funeral in Rose Milt Cemetery.
The Old Water Creek Church at Fulley Rt. 1 hosts Sunday School at 10 am with additional services at 11 am and 7 pm. Rev. Gene Showmaker seeks to reorganize the church and invites all to participate.
Mrs. Nettie L. Vinson aged 5 of Hooks Texas died at Texarkana on Thursday. Survivors include one sister Mrs. Wot Baber of Moe.
Rev. PD Movnton Mann will preach at First Methodist Church from Sunday morning through Friday evening. Bill Mann directs Evangelistic Music for the Dallas church and is noted as a recording artist. Services start 10:85 a.m. and 7 p.m. on Sunday, Dec 3, with a 7 p.m. evening service daily.
PINE BLUFF Ark AP three men were convicted of assault with intent to rape and sentenced to three years in prison. They faced rape charges in connection with an alleged attack on a 21-year-old crippled Pine Bluff woman Oct 10 near here. Circuit Judge Henry Smith instructed separate verdicts on each man.
Milton Eugene Boyce aged 55 died suddenly in Texarkana. He was a Methodist. Survived by his parents My and Mrs. Carroll Boyce of Hopes, two brothers Van C. Washington and Tommy Camden, four sisters Mrs. J. T. Urrey Camden, Mrs. Kelley Dudney Prescott, Mrs. Thomas Chirk Hal Springs. Funeral set for 2 pm Sunday at Herndon-Corelin Chapel with Rev. Rufus Sox Yells officiating. Burial in Washington.
President Kennedy praised Brooks Hays a longtime Arkansan public servant as he named him a White House special assistant on domestic and foreign policy with focus on trade. Hays thanked the President and noted the ceremony in the cabinet room with Vice President Johnson and family members present.
Los Angeles AP reports actress Gsther Williams has court permission to drop her married name Gage after divorcing actor-producer Ben Gage in 1959 after a 14 year marriage. Williams, 40, resumes her birth name and continues her career.
Three Guernsey basketball players and others were overcome at the Laneburg gym last night and hospitalized overnight. The Laneburg incident prompted an inspection for possible carbon monoxide from a muffler, a small hole found but not blamed for the episode. No other teams or students were endangered and all were released. A charity auction at Lions Club headquarters will run three days, with Santa present and proceeds aiding local families at Christmastime.
U S troops faced Soviet inspection on a Berlin to West Berlin convoy amid heightened East West tension. The Soviet news agency Nius called the moves a dangerous military display while US officers said the action stemmed from travel document errors and that the convoy proceeded after paper corrections.
MORRISTON ARK AP One of the major roadblocks to improving Arkansas agricultural markets is that farmers do not know the potential of their land or market demand. H Layton Lindsey of Kroger urged latest trends in grading quality packaging and other steps linking production to market. Governor Laney noted past disappointments in marketing perishable crops. Rockefeller said 99 percent of the state's ag products are processed outside Arkansas.
