Frank Douglas reports a hunting incident where a bear pursued a hunter who dropped his rifle and fled. The man slammed the cabin door and yelled to others to finish the bear while he went to fetch another rifle.
Dr. E Roger Samuel of Carmel Pennsylvania named General Practitioner of the Year by the American Medical Association urges restraint with new antibiotic drugs. He says penicillin is powerful but not for common colds and should be used only in real emergencies, warning against overuse like push button America. He recalls WWII era sulfa over the counter and cautions readers about drug tolerance and safety.
Ark-La Gas Company will discontinue retail sales of appliances in Central and Southern Arkansas. Existing inventories such as ranges water heaters dryers space heaters and gas refrigerators will be liquidated by January 1 1956. Starting December 1 appliances go on sale at cost at company offices in Little Rock North Little Rock Arkadelphia Benton England Fordyce Hope Lonoke Magnolia Malvern Monticello Morriston Pine Bluff Russellville Stamps Stuttgart and Warren.
Miss Mariam Kim, 29, former Olive View sanitarium clerk, pleaded guilty to disturbing the peace after trying repeatedly to kiss Glenn H. Hymer, the sanitarium’s administrative assistant. Hymer testified he made a citizen’s arrest. Kim mournfully remarked there was a time she would have been the injured party.
Berlin tensions rise as the German Democratic Republic proclaims Berlin its capital and orders Western radio cars from the Soviet sector to follow communist directives. London reports a Western four power warning. West Berlin's mayor seeks renewed pledges to defend the status quo.
Carl A Bryan 55 longtime Hope Chamber of Commerce manager died unexpectedly at the chamber office. A native of Fordyce he also worked at Longview Ardmore and Houston chambers. Survivors include wife Hazel and children Maxine Carl Jr and Roger. Funeral Friday at Herndon Cornelius Chapel with burial in Ardmore Oklahoma.
The CIO proceeded with a quick merger plan with the AFL after rejecting a demand from John L. Lewis of the United Mine Workers for 1,665,000 dollars. Lewis, a former CIO leader, claimed MW loans totaling 7,250,000 dollars were advanced in the late 1930s and remains due.
A former Pine Bluff athlete James Higgason of Pine Bluff Arkansas was named to the AP small college All-America third team. Higgason plays as a back for the Southwestern at Memphis team.
Hempstead County growers will receive official notices soon detailing 1956 cotton acreage allotments. Notices mailed by the County ASC Office reflect county determinations under federal law based on the national upland cotton allotment of 17.4 million acres proclaimed October 14. Farmers should report changes or nonparticipation promptly and verify farm details with the County ASC committee.

Washington reports that the Army Navy and Air Force have agreed to rotate helicopter transport for cabinet members and other top officials to meetings with President Eisenhower. Defense Department officials said the plan ends the dispute over who flies the officials.

Mrs Lucy Brown aged 79 longtime Fulton resident died at a daughter's home Thursday morning. She is survived by three children Deputy Sheriff Jack Brown of Hope and Woody Brown of Texarkana and a sister Mrs Frank Biddle of Texarkana. Funeral 2:30 PM Friday at Fulton Union Church conducted by Rev W H Snead. Burial in Fulton Cemetery by Herndon Cornelius.
In Paris the Radical Socialist steering committee voted 19 to 1 to expel Premier Edgar Faure from the party. The move follows his dissolution of the National Assembly and does not alter his role as acting premier. Mendes France remains Faure’s rival within the Radicals.
Canada pushes a plan to admit eight applicant nations to the United Nations before the Special Political Committee in New York with Delegate Paul Martin guiding a 27 nation resolution. The committee will publicly air the proposal, while Security Council veto risks loom from Nationalist China and Russia over the Red candidate list.
The Associated Press reports attractive prices across meat categories in U S grocery stores this weekend. Beef prime ribs and chuck roast receive attention while sirloin and porterhouse steaks drop in price. Pork chops pork loins and other pork items go on sale. Lamb legs and chops feature in many markets with frying chickens also promoted. The average price for choice beef has hovered around 67 cents a pound, down from 59 cents in 1951 1952. The Agriculture Department lists plentiful foods this month including turkeys potatoes apples cranberries and dairy products with limes oranges and grapefruit also noted as bargains.
A Toronto magistrate fined William Tierney, 48, fifty dollars after he stole twenty cents from a news vendor’s coin box.
R G McKeever of De Queen Ark asked the FCC for a permit to build a new radio station broadcasting on 139 kilocycles. If approved, it would be De Queen’s first station.
The first snow of the season fell in Arkansas with sleet continuing today across the state. Roads remained open though slick in places, Valley View School near Jonesboro closed, and trees bent by ice at De Queen. Temperatures ranged from 26 to 32 degrees as snow and sleet melted rapidly.
United Press reports a midsection cold spell breaks, eastern temperatures stay frigid in the 20s. Texas to the Dakotas see warm-up but remain below freezing to Oklahoma and northwest Texas. Arctic air chills the east as Ohio Indiana clear, while heavy rain and sleet hit Texas and Oklahoma with more snow forecast for the Midwest, including Chicago.
The University of Arkansas won first place team honors in all around judging at the 52nd Intercollegiate Poultry Judging Contest in Chicago. Twenty colleges competed as Arkansas scored 3761 of 4500. Texas A&M was second with 3720 and Cornell third with 3637. Rutgers tied Arkansas for first in market products judging. Cornell won in production judging and Arkansas in breed selection.
The Rev. William Ellis Harris, pastor of Liberty Heights Christian Church in Lawton Oklahoma, is accepted as pastor of First Christian Church of Hope and arrives today. He is married to Marguerite Wilson of Sand Springs and has served in Oklahoma Kansas and Idaho. His first sermon is set for December 4.
Southwestern Gas and Electric Company presented its ninth straight $50 contribution to the Hempstead County 4 H Club Council on December 1, 1955. O B Pullem of the Arkansas Division made the presentation to a council with 908 members. The funds may be used at the council's discretion. A H Gray Jr, Rural Development head, praised the 4 H clubs and said investment in rural youth ensures America’s future progress.
The untimely death of Chamber of Commerce Manager Carl A. Bryan brings regret and a proposal to dedicate Friday night’s Christmas parade to him. Bryan helped secure decorations and plan a splendid event. Mrs. John M. Allison visits her mother, while her husband serves as U S Ambassador to Japan. Highway Department pins of merit are awarded to 78 employees for long service across 20, 15, 10, 5, and 25 year marks. Weather records note sleet and an inch of rain with temperatures down to 2 degrees, and quail season opening for hunters.
Secretary Benson outlined a six point farm program to be presented to Congress in January. The plan aims to curb surpluses, expand exports, boost soil conservation, enlarge rural development, accelerate research, and speed up the Plains wheat and grazing land program. He warned it is not a cure all but a constructive start amid partisan attacks.
In a report from Little Rock, Revenue Commissioner J Orville Cheney said tighter tax enforcement has raised state tax revenue. Since July 1 the fiscal year total reached 45,281,307 compared with 41,258,540 in the previous period. November receipts were 9,158,466, up 851,193 from November 1954.
