Saturday Forecast With Warmth and Scattered Showers

The high pressure system brings a southerly flow with warm, moist air over Arkansas. The National Weather Service expects considerable cloudiness and mild conditions today. Partly cloudy skies are forecast for Saturday with a bit warmer temperatures and scattered showers and thunderstorms.

Hope Star reports a dry spell with a warm to hot Friday into the weekend. Highs mid to upper 80s and nights in the 60s with a front moving through Arkansas bringing cooler air from the north by Saturday night. Rain totals from the prior 24 hours include El Dorado 2.40 inches and Texarkana 1.60.

Toronto will host the first national Canadian Astrology Convention with seminars workshops and discussion groups. CIAC members consulted astrological charts to pick favorable dates for the event.

Hope Public Schools Offer Six Hour Bus Driver Training

The Hope Public Schools sponsor a six hour training program required by the State Department of Education for all school bus drivers and substitutes. Eligible drivers in Hempstead and Nevada Counties may attend two sessions with two time options each. Sessions run Wednesday and Thursday nights September 4-5 and September 11-12 starting at 7 p.m. in the Science Building at Hope High School, three hours each. Bill Revenga leads the program to meet all requirements.

Hope Band Parents Elect New Officers for 1974 75 Season

At the first meeting of the year on Tuesday band parents discussed concessions at home football games and the Third District Livestock Show. Fifty five members attended as new officers were introduced including Matt McCauley president Mel Thrash vice president Arthur Streeh secretary treasurer and Elmer Smith manager. The group viewed the remodeled band building with new chairs acoustical treatment and practice rooms. Band director Mr Wells and assistant director Mr Fairchild announced new facilities and the Verger Junior High School band. The senior high has 100 members and the junior high 75 with uniforms expected for 1975 76. Booster buttons are 50 cents each. Meetings are the second Tuesday of each month at 7 30 p m in the band building.

Boosters plan season under Bobcats support

The Bobcats Booster Club met August 27 to map out the coming season. Hope High cheerleaders will sell membership cards featuring an All-Sports brochure with coach and player information. Head coach Lawrence Hutson reported summer upgrades to the weight room and players’ dressing room and outlined further improvements funded by membership sales. A.J. Rhodes, president, led the meeting at Town and Country restaurant with 18 attendees as Ronnie Phillips presented the financial report.

Students take educational tour to Hot Springs

Twenty six Hempstead County youths from Hope High School, Saratoga Students, and Washington Students toured Hot Springs on Sunday August 29 sponsored by the Ouachita Area Development Corporation. Chaperones included Floyd Young Ed Trotter and Mrs Gladys Iston guiding named lists of students to I Q Zoo Alligator Farm Wax Museum and Animal Wonderland. Entertain ment Hall of Fame first ten inductees named in Las Vegas including Berlin Gershwin Chaplin Garland Griffith Hepburn Olivier ONeill Shaw Williams.

Obituaries for Crews Roberts Cunningham and Gregory

Seth W. Crews 88 of Hope died August 29 in a local nursing home. Survived by two sons a daughter eleven grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren and two half sisters. Funeral 2 p.m. Saturday at Herndon Funeral Chapel with Rev. Gordon Renshaw officiating. Burial Memory Gardens. Warren Wadkin Roberts 70 of Nashville died Wednesday in a Little Rock hospital. Survived by wife Dena a son Bill Roberts and a daughter Patty Roberts Bruton with three grandchildren. Services Friday 2 p.m. at Latimer Funeral Home Nashville with Revs Lawrence Amos and Clyde White. Owen Cunningham Oyster King of London dies at 64 from a heart attack. With 2000 in 1945 he opened an oyster bar that drew royalty and stars. Kenneth Gregory 67 former AP reporter and Ford PR exec dies in Clearwater. He spent 16 years at AP before joining Ford News.

Tax hike requests ruled out by Ford aides

President Ford will not seek a tax increase this year though he may outline plans for 1975 in January. Press secretary TerHorst said a tax raise to fight inflation is possible, while UAW President Woodcock opposed an across the board increase and favored targeted cuts and higher taxes on upper brackets and corporations. Ford signed a $4.5 billion public works bill despite overrun and proposed deferring $80 million via budget reform.

Battle royal feature at Hope's Fair Park Coliseum

Wrestling fans will see seven top fighters in a Russian style battle royal at Hope's Fair Park Coliseum tonight. All contestants must be tossed over the top rope and the winner earns eight hundred dollars added purse.
