The National Weather Service forecasts modest skies for northwest Arkansas with increased chances of thunderstorms as an upper level disturbance moves through. Rain is unlikely to affect the broader region, though isolated showers may occur in the extreme northwest.
Hope Star issues weather outlook for Labor Day weekend with highs in the 90s and isolated afternoon thundershowers. It lists rainfall amounts, regional temperatures, and naval rates for subscriptions, along with staff notices and affiliations of the Hope, Arkansas newspaper.
Mrs. Ernest Graham led an information spot outside Saratoga School promoting family health record books as a tool to track blood types immunizations allergies and doctor or dentist instructions. The drive included PTA leaders and extended to Spring Hill and county extension agents guiding parents on organizing health papers and records.
Mansfield reports that 12 governors who met Ford urged a five year limit on deregulating producer prices for new natural gas to spur exploration and production. Ford officials withheld commitment while noting the idea was new to the administration.
Former California governor Ronald Reagan rejected a third party run for the presidency and said he will decide soon whether to challenge President Ford for the Republican nomination. He stated he has little faith in third party movements and noted such runs often oppose the candidate they target. Reagan indicated a decision before year’s end.
Jonesboro realtor Bob Bennett gave back 8400 to Arkansas State University to end a housing controversy involving ASU President Ross Pritchard. He had leased a 70000 dollar home for a year for the president’s use and will allow the family to live rent free until October 1 while remodeling continues.
Arkansas health officials report more than 40 nursing homes inspected under a new law are in compliance. Two previously noncompliant homes corrected deficiencies, with Jacksonville Convalescence Hospital and Taylor Nursing Home making changes to meet requirements. The standard requires licensed personnel dispense medications, sparking concerns about staffing costs. Noncompliant homes face decertification and 30 days to comply or lose Medicaid payments. Several state units are awaiting inspection.
Sorghum yields are good to excellent for early varieties being combined while late varieties still grow. Livestock are in good condition though flies and ticks persist. Cotton fields are fair to good with bolls opening. bollworm and boll weevil infestations are heavy in some northeastern counties and spraying is frequent. Rice is good to excellent and nearing maturity with early harvests under way and fields being drained for ripening.
Ted Wagnon 23 editor for El Dorado News-Times will serve as press research assistant to Rep. Ray Thornton D Ark at his Washington office starting Wednesday. He joined the News-Times June 2 after roles at Crossett News Observer and Paragould Daily Press. He studied at Southern State College and Arkansas State University. Arkansas State enrollments show 6608 students through Wednesday for fall, 79 short of last year’s record. 34 students have not yet activated last year’s record could be topped if 80 of those return.
