Arkansas will stay warm and humid as a large stationary ridge sits over the eastern U S. Scattered showers and thundershowers are expected mainly in the afternoon and evening through Friday. An upper level disturbance from the plains will lift eastward increasing shower activity.

In Monroe Louisiana a 102 pound Hope watermelon bought by State Farm agent Larry Orwell of Hope for 25 dollars was flown to Monroe to star in a one day life insurance sales campaign. State Farm Mid-South regional VP William Sanders announced the campaign helped reach one billion dollars in life insurance in force across Arkansas Louisiana and Mississippi and 1 million auto life health and fire policies in force. The melon then rested in deputy regional VP Gene Shrader’s tub before being shared with staff.

Barney W. Jackson, 88, of Lafayette County, a retired Kansas City Southern railroad employee, died in a Hope hospital. Funeral held at Smith Funeral Home Stamps with burial in Minden cemetery. Flossie Jameson, 50, Prescott Insurance Agency office manager, died in a Nevada County hospital. Services at First United Methodist Church Prescott with burial in DeAnn cemetery.

A large Beasley Lawson and Ware family reunion was held at Hope City Park on Sunday August 17 with attendees from ten states. The event featured a gourmet buffet and barbecue, with the oldest participants Mrs Leitha Lawson and Mr Ezra White turning 73. Numerous relatives from Oklahoma City Cleveland Detroit Chicago Flint and more joined, and the farthest traveler was Mrs Valine Daniels.
Hope High School head coach and athletic director Lawrence Hutson spoke to the Hope Lions at the Sheraton Inn about the athletic program and the upcoming football season. He outlined staff assignments, player counts by grade, and the need for facilities improvements including a lighted field and track.
Monroe Louisiana officials said three confirmed encephalitis cases have been reported in the city. Encephalitis, transmitted by mosquitoes, has caused 31 deaths this summer in Mississippi. The latest case was confirmed Wednesday, with two more earlier in the week as authorities vow to fight the outbreak.
