Obituaries and notices list Edwin C. Kelley 67 died August 27 in a Texarkana hospital with services in Herndon Chapel and graveside in Monroe. Henry Clayton Edington 71 of Nashville died after illness. nine grandchildren noted. Lloyd Webb 57, Nashville resident, buried at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. World War I and Korean Conflict veteran. Henry L. Slatton 84, Pisgah area farmer, funeral in Delight Church of Christ. Local student Becky Garrett highlighted for FHA and clubs at American High School. Hope School proposes a simple weekly lunch menu. Tuesday features beef pattie on a bun with fries and banana pudding. Wednesday offers pizza with corn, Popeye salad and a peanut butter cookie. Thursday serves hot dog with mustard, beans, slaw, and sweet potato cake. Friday presents steak fingers with whipped potatoes, peas, biscuit and fruit pudding.

LITTLE ROCK AP Checks mailed this month to families with dependent children include a five dollar raise per child. Social Services Commissioner James B Cartwright said the staff calculated the budget could bear the increase. The rise adds about 354000 to monthly payments while the state covers 89000, with the federal government paying 75 percent of costs. Grants to 70878 children totaled 3214000 this month.
The Optimist Club will sponsor Hempstead County Fair Queen and Little Miss Hempstead County contests on Tuesday September 10 at 7 3 p.m. at Red River Vocational Technical School. Winners represent Hempstead County at the Third District Livestock Show on September 23. Entry deadline is September 3. eligibility requires age 16 to 21 for Queen and residency in Hempstead County. Fifteen Texarkana Fire Department members picketed City Hall to push for union recognition changes in live-in radius, a $50 monthly across the board raise, and cost of living raises every six months. The union met with City Manager Ron Copeland, then with the Board of Directors, but goals remained unmet.
United Nations Secretary-General Kurt Waldheim was admitted to Doctors Hospital in New York for severe gastritis. He is in good condition and is expected to be discharged in one or two days.
