Indians Receive Hundreds of Millions in Claims Settlements
The Indian Claims Commission, active since 1848, has paid out about $159 million with more than half its work to go before its April 10 1972 expiry. About 290 claims totaling roughly $150 million remain, including Seminole land claims dating to 1823 and Turtle Mountain Chippewa land disputes. The commission aims to extend for five more years to finish cases, relying on streamlined procedures and a small cadre of specialized attorneys.
