Washington AP reports administration leaders in the House faced an initial setback as the foreign aid bill was pared back. Attempts to cut the 2.5 billion dollar economic assistance portion followed Republicans and Southern Democrats removing the second year, leaving a one year program. The two year authorization was approved by the House Foreign Affairs Committee, with 3.1 billion for this year and nearly 3.6 billion for the next fiscal year. The final vote stood 129 to 116 against the second year, as debate concluded.
Two 18-year-olds from Ritzville Washington faced arraignment in Groveland on charges including attempted murder as a 17-year-old Ukiah girl fights for life after a kidnapping and shooting spree that left three dead. The suspects also face rape and kidnapping counts in Ukiah, with additional murders tied to Deanna Buse and Samuel Ledgerwood in Washington and Oregon.
State Highway Director Ward Goodman says the Highway Commission approved $100,000 to finance feasibility studies by Wilbur Smith & Associates of New Haven for turnpike corridors. About 1,200 miles will be examined. six months is the planned completion, with western and central routes studied separately.
Forrest City Arkansas AP reports Warwick Electronics employees will vote Friday on whether to end union representation or let the International Union of Electrical, Machine Workers Local 1106 continue to represent them. The National Labor Relations Board in Memphis will conduct the decertification election.
Four people were injured in a two car collision Thursday morning at Third and Hervey Streets. Elisha Walker, 66, McCaskill, was charged with failure to yield by City Officers Johnson Milam and Long after his car hit Gerald Wayne McLelland, 24, Prescott. Thelma L Stewart, 43, McCaskill, had a chest injury while Debbie Ann Stewart, 3, sustained a head injury. Scott Whitlock, Texarkana, in McLelland’s car, had a head injury. Both Walker and McLelland’s passengers were treated at a local hospital.
A secret Johnson administration memo attacking the $5.2 billion antipoverty bill sparks furor among Labor Committee Democrats. It seeks removal of a $3 billion emergency slum job program, hides projected five year costs, and scraps a $105 million program backed by Kennedy and Javits. Crossett Ark AP drive‑in Minit Shop robbed Wednesday night of about $2300. Officers named three or four suspects. one man and two others entered the store while a third distracted clerks and another man may have waited outside. Rex Dodson, owner, reported about $690 in cash and over $1600 in payroll checks stolen.
David Lews Barrow 19 of Waldron died Wednesday morning in a two vehicle crash on U S 71 south of Abbott Ouachita County. Barrow crossed the center line colliding with a truck driven by Ernest Lee Bowden 30 of Muldrow Okla Bowden not badly injured. E M Arnold president of the Arkansas Livestock Show Association announced Vernon Magness of Hot Springs will become general manager of the Arkansas Livestock Exposition after the 1967 Exposition Oct 8. Magness 47 will succeed Clyde E Byrd who retires for health reasons. Magness owns a feed and seed store in Malvern and has been sales manager for feed manufacturers.
State Supreme Court Justice Lyle Brown teaches Century Bible Class at First Methodist on August 27 in Hope before moving to Little Rock. Youth Rally Day is August 26 at Winrock Farms with a bus to Petit Jean and return that evening. Visitors invited to support Governor Rockefeller and the Arkansas Republican Party. Local student details include Cyril Stewart in critical condition after a highway crash near Prescott. Ann Arnold of Hope enters University of Arkansas Medical School as one of 110 first year students. she was a 1964 Hope High graduate and Phi sorority member with multiple honors. U S losses in the air war against North Vietnam rose to 12 planes and 18 fill ers this week as Communist MiGs and ground batteries damaged six more American jets. The U S Command said two MIGs were shot down and a third likely fell. One flyer was rescued and 10 missing. Rail yards around Hanoi suffered heavy destruction while ground attacks remained quiet. Civilians died in roadside blasts near Saigon and Hue. US casualties last week totaled 108 dead and 843 wounded, with Communist losses rising to 1,498 killed. The raids show continued resolve to strike Hanoi despite rising North Vietnamese air defenses.
A 12 year old girl, Sue Vann of Gillham, missing since Aug 15, was found in a dry creek bed nine miles north of De Queen. Sheriff Louie Hilton said 19 year old Winston Randolf Blair led investigators to the body. Autopsy to be performed in Little Rock. Blair, jailed on armed robbery and assault charges, claimed knowledge of the location.
