Army fleet grows with 5,000-craft navy rivalry

J Leanor Ragsdale reports that the U S Army Transport Service fields a rapidly expanding fleet of nearly five thousand craft across corps from Engineers to Quartermaster. Boats range from 200-foot mine-planters to 13% foot assault craft, serving reconnaissance, pontoons, and riverine duties. The Coast Artillery, Army Air Corps, and Signal Corps integrate mine planters and radio controlled targets while engineers maintain navigable waterways and ferries. The Tank lighter and self propelled barges enable river tank crossings, with Civilians manning peacetime ships and Army personnel in command during war. The roster highlights the Army Transport Service growth since Spanish War days, now operating about 30 ocean going ships with a 20,000 man, 6.53 million ton potential if all sail.
