Grunert Aide to MacArthur in Philippine Command
Lt General George Grunert, long a Philippine veteran and former head of the U S Army forces here, serves as a key second in command to General Douglas MacArthur as tensions rise around the powder keg in Manila. Grunert, born July 21 1880 in White Haven Pennsylvania, began his army career in 1900 and rose through Cuba the Philippines and Europe, earning the Legion of Honor Purple Heart and DSM. He has spent much of his career in the Philippines and returned in 1941 to assist MacArthur amid mounting dangers.
