Training Is Helping The Retarded
A Syracuse program places mentally underdeveloped young women in a work-study home to gain time awareness and job skills. Nine girls aged 17 to 18 live in a white-brick mansion, earning watches as symbols of responsibility. Over time, several have secured employment in cafeterias, hospitals, and shops, with five of the first group discharged and others still working. The project aims to move beyond domestic tasks toward independent living, potentially expanding to other communities and even to young men if successful.
