Moon Shot Program Costs Run Deep Across Space Effort

The Moon Shot effort involves more than 20,000 firms and 300,000 people with salaries near 2 billion dollars per year. North American and Grumman report half contract dollars to subcontracts while hundreds of firms work on Saturn V parts. NASA earmarks 1.3 billion for Saturn development this year and plans 100 million per launch vehicle. Ground testing and launch pad construction rise, with 1964 facilities funding at 800 million across Mississippi, Alabama, Louisiana, Cape Canaveral and others. Cape Canaveral will see nearly a billion in launch complexes and support facilities, with 5,000 workers on site, rising by 4,000 next year. Williams notes tech advances demand costly, safer craft to fly higher and faster and shield crews from heat and cold.
