The Associated Press reports a heat surge as a surface high pressure system settles over Arkansas. A cooler spell ends as high pressure at the surface and aloft moves into the state with the National Weather Service noting the western Atlantic high and a Gulf ridge.
Hope Star lists daily weather outlook with southwest flow and scattered thundershowers forecast for Arkansas. Highs near 90s and upper sixties lows, with dew and fog patterns described. Also prints subscription prices, circulation notes, and advertising rate card for Hope Arkansas and out-of-state mail.
President Ford toured the Fort Chaffee area after dedicating the hospital. Sister Judith Marie Kieth described nervous anticipation shifting to calm as the motorcade along main street drew cheers. Ford was briefed by Donald McDonald on Chaffee operations before heading to Colorado for vacation.

Services held in Herndon Latimer Mt Nebo and Cornish chapels with burial in Rose Hill Saratoga Saratoga and Mt Nebo cemeteries. Survivors include numerous children grandchildren and relatives.
Kissinger urged punishing international terrorism as outside the law and said it discredits any political objective. He agreed to address the ABA as part of a program to explain U.S. foreign policy beyond Washington and planned a Birmingham speech later in the week.
Hope High School alumni reunions are set for Saturday August 21 from 2 to 5 p.m. at multiple venues. Classes 1912–1929 meet at Holiday Inn Hgy 4&1 30, 1930–1949 at Perry's Restaurant Perrytown, 1950–1959 at Town and County Restaurant 3rd and Shower, 1960–1975 at Trade Winds-Hgy 29 and I-30. Admission is $1.50 and open to all who wish to reconnect regardless of school attendance.
Indonesia floated a merger with Portuguese Timor after rumor of a coup in Timor’s island territory. Fretilin leader Jose Ramos Horta questioned reports, while Timor plans shifted. Darwin airport note only source. Indonesia signaled protection if Timor sought union, as Portugal maintains sovereignty over the eastern half.
The Hope High School band parents meeting is set for 7:30 p.m. Thursday in the band building. New band uniforms arrived. Commencement was held August 8 at Henderson State University in Arkadelphia with 201 graduates. Names include Donna R. Smith and several others from Hope and surrounding towns.
