Desertion Rate Climbs in Vietnam
AP reporting from Washington notes the U S Army desertion rate in the Vietnam era rising to wartime highs. For the first ten months of fiscal 1971 ending June 30 the total deserters reached 68 449 about 44 percent of combat divisions and final two months will lift the figure further. Desertions have grown since 1965 with 1968 surpassing the Korean war peak and World War II still ahead. The Army cites 1961 62 6 per 1 000 as of April fiscal 1971 62 6 per 1 000 versus 52 3 in fiscal 1970 while World War II peaked at 63 per 1 000 in 1944. Navy and Air Force rates are much lower though Marines show a decline from 59 6 to 56 1 per 1 000. Most deserters are apprehended or return voluntarily. legal action often becomes AWOL charges due to proving intent. A Senate subcommittee criticized Pentagon lack of action and Defense Department established a uniform policy last September. Army attributes the rise to fear of combat and says most deserters leave after receiving Vietnam orders, with casualties down and replacements down to about 15,000 monthly from 45,000 in 1968.
