Washington Public Schools start Thursday August 26 with 8:00 a.m. classes for all grades and a half day schedule for late August through September 3. Full days resume September 6 with bus routes similar to last year and in-service meetings that week.
Chou Enlai discusses U S policy on Taiwan and two Chinas mission while signaling willingness to negotiate with Washington. He rejects Soviet nuclear talks and calls for a world conference to abolish weapons. He notes underground tunnels for defense and urges gradual rapproachment for Korea peaceful unification.

AFL CIO Executive Council pledged support for across the board federal wage and price controls if Nixon deems them needed to aid the economy. Meany says they would cooperate only if controls are even handed and broad, urging release of funds, housing and health programs, higher minimum wage, and lower interest rates. The group criticizes 2% years of mismanagement and cites unemployment and idle capacity while urging tax policy changes.
Colma’s 13 cemeteries have become overgrown and littered as greenskeepers and grave diggers strike for over nine weeks. San Francisco officials seek talks between the Cemetery Workers Union and cemetery operators after a walkout that has stored more than 1,000 bodies awaiting burial.

Ozell Sutton of the Justice Department met Gov. Dale Bumpers in Little Rock to discuss mediation for Marianna racial tensions. Robert Whitfield said a mediation team could be sent if both sides agreed. Bumpers urged talks while noting potential for state police if needed to keep the peace.
