A weak cold front moved south west through Arkansas Thursday afternoon bringing scattered showers and thunderstorms into the evening. Temperatures remained well below normal in the northeast with highs in the low to mid range.

Man killed in Batesville auto pedestrian crash

An auto pedestrian crash in Batesville left J C Helms, 62, of Concord dead after stepping into the path of a car driven by John H Ballentine, 64, of Newport. Police Sgt Don Clark reported the incident occurred at the intersection of U S 167 and Chaney Street early today.

Get acquainted hand shaking session for radio club

All Citizen Band Operators in the area are invited to a coffee session this Friday at the Holiday Inn at 7 p.m. The Watermelon City Area Citizens Band Radio Club holds a monthly meeting at 2 p.m. Sunday, August 10, at the Red River Vo-Tech School. Saratoga Schools Set Start Dates and Schedule

Saratoga schools open August 26 with regular classes at 8:15 a.m. Registration for all students is Monday, August 20 from 9 to 11 a.m. Buses depart at noon. Half day sessions run through August 29. Labor Day holiday closes school September 1. Full days resume September 2.

Rev Ralph Burke to Speak at Local United Methodist Church

The Rev Ralph Burke pastor of First United Methodist Church Rowlett Dallas will preach at the 10:60 a m worship service on August 10. He is a Hempstead County native, son of Jesse and Mrs Burke of DeAnn community. He graduated from Blevins High School and earned bachelor and master degrees from Southern Methodist University Dallas and is a Perkins School of Theology graduate. He has served in his current appointment for ten years and is married to Marge Malone with a daughter Kim entering SMU this fall.

ILA members refuse to load grain at Beaumont port

A Yugoslav cargo ship Banija sat idle in Beaumont Texas as six to seven ILA longshoremen walked off the job mid afternoon halting grain loading. The stoppage follows an ILA resolution not to load grain bound for the Soviet Union unless sales do not raise U S prices. Indications pointed to possible similar actions in Houston and Corpus Christi.

Plane crash injures two near Little Rock

State Police said a 1941 Taylor two passenger plane stalled and nose dived into a pasture along Lorantz Road in northern Saline County just south of the Pulaski County line. Two men were seriously injured and transported to Little Rock. Pilot Kenneth Vick was named. the other passenger remained unidentified.

Raymond Towers and Queen Anthony Die in Texarkana Area

Raymond Towers grandson of Mrs Aurilla McKinney of Bodtaw died Tuesday in a tattigerock hospital. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the College Hill Baptist Church in Texarkana. Burial will be in Providence Cemetery at Emmet. Queen Anthony sister of Johnny Wesson of Tollett died Monday at 76.5.1. Survivors include five daughters, five sons, four sisters, 37 grandchildren and many great grandchildren. Funeral services at Mt Pleasant Baptist Church with burial in Oak Grove Cemetery at Ogden. Tom R. Hicks of Rosston died Wednesday, 80, burial at Union Cemetery. Survivors include three sons and three daughters. Rena Carolyn Walton, 83, of Ashdown died in a Little River county nursing home. Survivors include two brothers and four sisters. Services Saturday at Greater Mt Zion Baptist Church in Ashdown. burial in Rhodes Cemetery.

Rock Island Railroad lays off 61 Arkansas workers

Rock Island Railroad announces 61 more Arkansas employees laid off due to financial trouble. Leroy Williams, assistant superintendent for the Arkansas Division, said the layoffs take effect within two weeks, raising total Arkansas layoffs to 114. Workers may be rehired if conditions improve amid an eight year profit drought and a 1974 deficit of 23 million.

Hope public schools set bus schedules for Hopewell Yerger routes

The district releases regular bis schedules starting August 1 with routes listed by bus driver and school. Morning and afternoon loops cover Paisley Guernsey Brookwood Garland and Yerger High School, with stops at Kyle routes and elementary pickup. Grain probe continues after indictments in Houston

A federal probe into grain export irregularities persisted in New Orleans with a pause to return indictments against 22 men and a grain elevator company. The year-long investigation has resulted in 47 men and four grain inspectors being indicted, with action in Houston, as U.S. Attorney Gerald Gallinghouse stated the inquiry will run until it is fully convinced.
