A Dallas store evades blue laws by forming a Saturday night purchase and Sunday opening, then reselling Monday to the chain. The Memphis paper notes such ingenuity is wasted on a silliness of regulation while other editorials poke light fun at economy and pollution and stock market confusion.
Sen. Joan J. McClellan refused to bring his subcommittee to Chicago to probe the Black P Stone Nation. Ministers Barber and Burrell testified of threats, bombings, and fear in the KOCO and Woodlawn areas, saying residents won t testify or file complaints.
Edward J. Cooper an eighth grade English teacher at Yerger Junior High has composed seven songs and twelve published numbers. He holds a royalty contract with Tennessee Music and Printing. His early work began at Hope Junior High in 1967 and spread through Hope churches and schools. He credits family, faith, and education for his success and dreams of inspiring others. Ellen Turner and Hendrix College Choir prepare a European five country tour with a self funded group, directed by Robert M. McGill.
A presidential emergency board urged phasing out railroad firemen through retirement and death as part of a long standing labor dispute. The plan envisions merging firemen and brakemen into a single class, with no new firemen hired and funds redirected to raise rail workers’ pay. Negotiations would run 15 days before potential binding arbitration.
HOT SPRINGS Ark AP Gov Winthrop Rockefeller told about 1200 state and county office employees that the nation must prepare for times of food shortage. He said surplus days will end and U S agricultural resources must be protected and that the country will rise to the challenge when that day comes.
Scott Smyth, age 15, from Rosston, has been missing since last Tuesday. His father appeals to state police and the newspaper for help. He is 5 feet 7 inches, 124 pounds with brown eyes, dark brown hair, and a missing upper left front tooth. He chews tobacco and had been sniffing glue a week.
Gov. Winthrop Rockefeller's executive secretary said he would likely back legislation to create a separate school self insurance program if elected. Faulkner noted educators have pressed for self insurance to counter rising premiums and potential fire insurance losses, with Dr. John Peterson helping develop the plan for a public schools program and state agencies.
Singer Bobby Darin is credited with saving a drowning boy at King's Beach Lake Tahoe. He leaped from a motor boat into rough water fully clothed when the boy cried for help about 150 feet from shore. Darin said he was glad the boy was only about 20 feet away since he’s a poor swimmer.
Dr. Max Milam, head of Arkansas Administration Department, said the 1969 tax increases did not meet expectations. The package was expected to raise about 20 million dollars but yielded around 16 million in the last fiscal year. He noted growth in revenues and unclear separation of effects from the tax increases.
In Marin County Hall of Justice a midmorning trial session ended in a gun battle that killed Superior Court Judge Harold J. Haley and two San Quentin convicts, plus an intruder. Deputies and others were wounded including Deputy District Attorney Gary Thomas and convict Ruchell Magee. Jurors and witnesses suffered injuries as the escape attempt unraveled outside the blue domed courthouse.
Patty Nelson leads the Spring and Autumn Alliance placing 50 college students in personal contact with local elderly residents. The 19 year old UC Santa Cruz junior, studying gerontology, began with a retirement hotel, learned from conversations about gardening and grandchildren, and plans to expand the outreach this fall while maintaining ties with about 500 elderly locals.
Washington AP Democratic Congress moves toward giving President Nixon standby authority to control prices wages and rents under the Defense Production Act extension. Democratic conferees supported the provision with one Republican ally amid GOP opposition citing political motive. Supporters say the authority would pressure inflation relief even if unused.
Washington AP Secretary of Transportation Volpe urged public participation in setting environmental focused engine noise standards for civilian SST aircraft. FAA notice of proposed rulemaking accompanies the appeal. Critics worry SSTs will be too loud on ground and cause damaging sonic booms.
Cambodian strike forces backed by fighter bombers recaptured Skoun, ending a seven day Communist occupation. The town northeast of Phnom Penh was a key objective in the northern offensive started August 1. Cambodian losses were light with five troops wounded and estimates of roughly 900 enemy casualties. Air support came from U S and South Vietnamese forces and Cambodia's small T28 squadron.
Washington AP Draft Director Curtis W Tarr says lottery number 195 will be the highest called in the 1970 draft. He set 195 as the September ceiling, same as August, likely stable rest of year, shielding those with higher numbers from induction. Announcement coincides with Defense Dept draft call totals for the year and outlines 12 008 in September, 13 000 in October, 9 000 in November, and 7 000 in December.
