Eleven Die In Minneapolis Blaze At East Hennepin

A three story building on East Hennepin Avenue in downtown Minneapolis burned early today killing eleven men, many elderly. Four people were hospitalized in critical condition and nine escaped, one via rope from the top floor. The fire started in a wooden exterior stairway. interior floors two and three were destroyed while the first floor fared better. Preliminary loss was about 150000. The building housed three businesses on the first floor and 33 rooms and apartments on the upper floors.

More Liberal Unemployment Insurance Passed in Senate Vote

President Nixon would extend unemployment insurance to 4.7 million more workers and lengthen benefit periods during high jobless times. The Senate approved the measure 56-19 after House action of 388-3 earlier, with conferees seeking to restore a farm workers provision left out in the compromise.

200 Mile War On Border Of Laos

The United States and South Vietnam wage a wide air and ground offensive along 200 miles of the Laotian border to block North Vietnamese troops and war supplies headed for South Vietnam and Cambodia. South Vietnamese units, including 1st and 2nd infantry divisions and a marine brigade, conduct operations as U.S. B52s drop bombs at night along the Ho Chi Minh trail toward the Cambodian border. Casualties and damage are reported at Kham Duc where North Vietnamese sappers attacked, leaving several dead and wounded.

Manson's Attorney Jailed Over Contempt

Los Angeles AP reports defense attorney Dave Shinn spent three nights in jail with Charles Manson after the clan leader briefly flashed a newspaper headline to the jury. The judge cited willful contempt for leaving the paper within reach at the counsel table. Shinn said the act was accidental and followed a denied mistrial motion surrounding Nixon's statement.

Romney Leads Michigan GOP Senate Race Amid Tech Delays

Lenore Romney held a slim edge over State Sen. Robert Huber in Michigan's GOP Senate primary as computer problems delayed vote tabulation in Detroit. With 73 percent of precincts in, Romney led Huber 239,804 to 221,970. In other Tuesday primaries Missouri Kansas Idaho results showed Symington and Frizzell winning, with incumbents renominated.

Missing Man Huckabee Found Near Spring Hill Battlefield Loop

Bavern Huckabee, 82, who had been missing since Monday night in the Battlefield Loop area near Spring Hill, was found alive in a small clearing shortly before 9 this morning. He reported good health and was taken to Memorial Hospital for a checkup. The search involved the sheriff's department Hempstead County Rescue Unit and volunteers.

Miss Spaak Seeks Custody of 7 Year Old Sabrina

Fulton Road Is Up for Bidding

The Arkansas Highway Commission will open bids August 26 on 14 projects totaling about 5.2 million dollars. Projects include a north approach to the I 430 Arkansas River Bridge at an estimated 1.89 million and resurfacing and drainage work across numerous counties from Ashley to White, with several state highways and bridge relocations slated.

JCs Meet to Reactivate Do Something Program
