Woman Slain at Natchez Shocks Quiet Recluse
The body of Miss Jane Merrill, aged recluse, was found in a thicket about 200 yards from her Natchez home after an all night search. Coroner's inquest returned death by unknown hands with two neck wounds and one in the left side. The dining room of her antebellum plantation reportedly bore bullets. a blood trail led to the thicket. Miss Merrill, daughter of Ayres Merrill, a former U.S. ambassador to Belgium, lived in seclusion and wore clothing from 40 years ago. An army coat found inside the house is the only clue.
