International Paper Company purchased 3,000 acres in Hempstead Nevada and Little River counties for an undisclosed sum. BR. W. Edwards Hope Contractor, spokesman for DeRoan Forest Inc., confirmed the sale.

The Soviet Union announced the launch of its Molniya 1 satellite and successful television transmission between Moscow and Vladivostok, about 4,000 miles east of Moscow on the Sea of Japan. Tass reported the satellite entered a high elliptical orbit today.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr leads a three mile march from Roxbury to Boston Common to protest school housing and job segregation. About 25 000 expected with 5 000 to start. rally could draw 50 000. King Abernathy police and civic leaders participate.
G Mennen Williams remains assistant secretary of state for African affairs after a surprise meeting with President Johnson. Williams announced the reappointment and said the President expressed continued confidence in his work.
U S mediator William E Simkin says a May 1 steel strike can be avoided and calls separate talks with United Steelworkers and basic steel industry leaders. He notes a contract extension is possible and states there is no current plan to seek Taft Hartley Act injunctions. USW President David J McDonald says no pact extension without a new agreement.
City police report a roof entry at Barry's Quik Sak No. 1 on West Third. A money order machine, $15 in postage stamps, and 10 cartons of cigarettes were stolen. no other items appeared missing. Investigation continues.

President Johnson has escalated his turn off lights campaign. Returning to the White House, he entered the press office and snapped off the light in the ladies powder room before resuming his duties.
Texarkana officials and 100 residents attended a Corps of Engineers hearing on the Red River navigation study. The interim plan would allow river traffic from the Mississippi at Old River to Shreveport and on toward Daingerfield area, with bank stabilization to Denison Dam. The New Orleans district engineer said navigation above Shreveport is not economical at this time and will be studied further with final plans due in June 1968. Congressmen Patman and Harris voiced cautious optimism for future expansion and urged continued effort toward Denison.

Dora Ann King, Hope, pianist for Ouachita Baptist University singers, and guests visit as Miss Bower of Shreveport plans Stephens College enrollment.
Federal mediator William E. Simkin held a 12 hour exploratory session with the United Steelworkers Union to break a deadlock that could trigger a May 1 steel strike. He said the atmosphere was excellent and that he would meet industry negotiators before returning to the union. He offered no specific recommendations to the union.
Senate leaders aim to vote early next week on a Wil liams rider that would impose heavy penalties for vote buying and election fraud. Ellender warned debate could last eight weeks if the poll tax ban amendment remains. Dirksen and Mansfield want swift action but contend the poll tax rider undercuts passage. The measure would allow federal registration in five Deep South states and parts of six others and pause literacy tests.
Secretary of State Kelly Bryant asked Governor Faubus to convene the Capitol cafeteria supervisory committee after the cafeteria closed March 22 amid racial demonstrations. A federal judge ruled it cannot operate as a private club to exclude Negroes.
